Team in Training update – July 21, 2006
It’s been
a little over a month since I began this training and I am feeling really inspired. My longest run to date is 6 miles, the
most I have ever run (at one time of course) in my life. I am looking forward to the half marathon and am determined to run
the entire race. Last Tuesday was speed training at the track, we ran 10 laps
one at a time with a 3 minute break in between,. It sounded pretty easy, 2.5 miles, I can do that but the catch was to try
to run faster than normal. Apparently this will make the marathon pace seem much easier as well as picking up my pace a bit.
My fastest lap was 2 minutes 5 seconds, which if I could keep up that pace I could be running an 8:20 but it was actually
a really challenging work out for me, much harder than I anticipated.
I am enjoying being a part of Team in Training for several reasons, first, because of the fundraising with the hope of a breakthrough
in the fight against cancer and secondly because of the personal challenge of running and pushing myself toward a goal I have
not previously achieved and along with that meeting some really wonderful people, my team mates as well as honorees, Leukemia
and Lymphoma survivors who share their stories which inspire us to work all the harder..
Thanks to all that
have supported me, the good wishes and kind thoughts are truly appreciated and to date I have raised 75% of my goal of $4,000.00. I am almost to Maui!!!

UPDATE 09/15/2006
It's 1:00 am, the morning I am leaving for Maui, I have been packing and getting ready for the trip and am
very excited about the 1/2 marathon on Sunday. Thanks to all of you I reached my fundraising goal!!!! This will help our team's
mission: To cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life
of patients and their families.
The training has been an amazing experience for me, I feel ready to run the
13.1 miles! 2 weeks ago we had our dress rehearsal in Monterey, we wore the clothes and shoes etc that we would be wearing
the day of the event. I ran 12 miles that day and my average per mile time was 12 minutes, at that pace it will take me about
2 hours to complete the 1/2 marathon. The course is similar to the course in Maui, slight inclines and incredibly beautiful.
The run started at El Estero Park and continued along the bike/walking path near Fisherman's Wharf, along Cannery Row,
past Lover's Point in Pacific Grove, meandering along the coast a ways past Asilomar was my 6 mile turnaround point.
I was so surprised that I felt fine after the run. The training I've received from my coach and mentors has made all the difference,
they are truly awesome people. At the beginning of our training we were timed on a one mile run, my time was 11:20, last
Tuesday we repeated the exercise and my time was 9:25, yahoo! I reached my daughter's first timed mile run, of course
her time increased as well to 7:30, so I guess she will be waiting for me at the finish line. We were both happy with
our improvement. I wanted to let you know about my progress and thank you again for your part in helping the people
with blood related cancers.
